The Workcamp Begins

On Saturday the 18^th of August 2018, 13 young people from nine different countries arrived at the Laakenhof, set up their quarters in the new farm or in a tent. They then came together for the first time in this new constellation to begin getting to know each other.

The basic outline for the coming two weeks was then shared with and shaped by the participants on Sunday. Next they wrote several key rules, which they all agreed to stick to for the rest of the camp. This was followed by a tour of the “new Laakenhof”, and a bike ride to Neubeckum to the site of the “old Laakenhof” where they were given an informative tour and introduced to the guiding principles and multifaceted nature of the farm.

On Monday (the 20^th of August) the first projects began: posts were covered with protective paint and the first 20 holes were dug around the field which is to be fenced in (very sweaty work in such dry ground); a greenhouse on the “old Laakenhof” was partly dismantled and reconstructed on the “new Laakenhof” where it will serve as a space to dry washing; one group supported the farmers of the Laakenhof with the vegetable harvest and milking the cows as well as being introduced to the art of cheese-making; the last group ensured that all bellies were full (a delightful curry with spices imported from Japan was served up for lunch).

All participants report to be enjoying their time, a sense of community, interesting conversation, and coming together by learning about each other’s cultures…

Am Samstag, den 18. August 2018 sind 13 junge Menschen aus 9 verschiedenen Ländern auf dem „neuen Laakenhof“ angekommen, haben ihr Quartier in Wohnräumen oder Zelt bezogen und sich in einer ersten gemütlichen Kennenlernrunde gegenseitig vorgestellt.

Sonntag gab es dann erste Infos zum Ablauf der nächsten Tage, die Teilnehmer selbst haben dann einige Regeln aufgeschrieben, an die sich jeder halten sollte. Ein Rundgang über den „neuen Laakenhof“ folgte, bevor es dann gemeinsam mit dem Rad nach Neubeckum zum „alten Laakenhof“ ging. Bei einem Hofrundgang wurde den Teilnehmern des Workcamps die Vielseitigkeit des Laakenhof-Betriebes vorgestellt.

Am heutigen Montag sind die ersten Arbeitsprojekte gestartet: Riegelpfähle wurden mit Schutzanstrich versehen und die ersten 20 Löcher in die zu umzäunende Weide gegraben (eine schweißtreibende Arbeit bei dem ausgetrocknetem Boden…) – ein großer Bauwagen wird aufgearbeitet, abgeschliffen und gestrichen – ein Gewächshaus auf dem „alten Laakenhof“ wird zum Teil abgebaut und auf dem „neuen Laakenhof“ wieder aufgestellt (soll dort als Wäschetrocknungstunnel dienen) – eine Gruppe hat den Laakenhofbetreibern bei der Gemüseernte, beim Melken der Kühe und in der Käserei mitgeholfen oder über die Schulter geschaut – eine Gruppe hat für das leibliche Wohl der fast 20 Personen gesorgt (ein köstliches Currygewürz aus Japan kam dabei zum Einsatz)

Macht allen Beteiligten echt viel Spaß, ein tolles Miteinander, interessante Unterhaltungen bringen uns gegenseitig die andere Kultur näher….
